Introduction​

2025 is the year of AI agents. AI Agent for Excel keeps pace with the trend, bringing an autonomous agent into Excel to handle spreadsheet work on your behalf. The agent can currently perform the following tasks for you—last but not least:

  • Model generation, review, and improvement
  • Data consolidation, cleaning, summarization, analysis, validation, prediction, and enrichment
  • Formula optimization and debugging

Highlights​

  • While most AI tools in Excel provide guidance in the form of text, AI Agent for Excel suggests cell edits—both data and formulas—that users can apply with a single click. It is therefore more automated and enables complex tasks such as generating or refining entire models (including both data and formulas), in a single action.

  • "Add Knowledge": You can attach documents describing your business knowledge to your prompts, and the tool will consider this knowledge as part of the context when generating responses. Currently, it accepts files such as .pdf and .docx; support for Excel files will be added soon.

  • "Web Search": enables users to search for the latest information on the internet and read content from a provided link. This information can then either be imported into the workbook or used as part of the context when generating AI responses.
  • Plenty of task examples: To help you explore the agent’s capabilities, we’ve categorized common tasks as shown above. For each task, you’ll find multiple examples with sample data and ready-to-try prompts.

Installation​

The add-in is compatible with a wide range of Excel versions, including Microsoft 365 business, personal, and family plans, as well as Office 2021, most licenses for Office 2019 and 2016. You have three options to install the add-in:

Important note: If you use Excel 2016 or 2019 and you see a blank page when loading the add-in, it's because the version of your Excel does not support the add-in. You could download WebView2 from Microsoft, and then reload the add-in, this may resolve the issue. Otherwise, please consider upgrading to a recent version of Excel or use Excel Online.

Uninstallation​

  1. Click the "Insert" tab (or "Home" tab for certain versions of Excel), and then click "My Add-ins".
  2. Under "My Add-ins", click the 3 dots menu next to the add-in you want to remove.
  3. Click "Remove".
  4. Read the notice that appears and click "Remove".
